Signs Your Headache Needs Medical Attention

Health & Medical Blog

A headache is a common medical problem that you may experience for several reasons. Most headaches will subside naturally or with the use of over-the-counter medications. However, there are times when headaches are persistent and they can be debilitating enough to affect your daily life.

You may be wondering about the signs that mean a headache is more serious and requires medical attention. Here's a look at some of the signs that indicate you should see a doctor.

A Sudden Attack

A headache that hurts very suddenly and severely is a sign that you should take things seriously. If the headache starts mild and in less than five minutes it becomes extremely painful, you need to go and see a doctor right away. If it feels like this is the worst headache you have ever had in your life, chances are it probably is, so call your doctor.

Blood Thinner Medication

If you're currently taking blood thinner medication you're probably doing so because your doctor has identified issues that may cause your blood to clot. Blood clots can spark headaches. If you're on this type of medication and you start having a severe headache, do not hesitate to call your doctor immediately. By doing so you may be able to offset a stroke.

Pain In the Back of Your Head

Tension headaches often cause feelings of pain around your forehead or in the back of your head or neck. These may subside once you get some sleep, or take over-the-counter medications. However, there are times when these headaches can be persistent and this can be a sign of something more serious. If this type of headache goes on for several hours and does not subside with rest or over-the-counter pain reliever you should see your doctor.

Numbness In Limbs

If you have a headache that is so severe that you feel numbness in your legs or your arms, this is a sign that you may be having a stroke. These signs may be accompanied by slurred speech or even a seizure. This calls for emergency care and you should get to a hospital right away.

Take Care of Your Headache

Once you start having a headache that seems out of the ordinary, it is a good idea to call your doctor. Headaches are usually not problematic. However, there are instances where there is a cause for concern and you need to seek medical attention.

Making Changes With Vision Therapy

When my daughter began having academic problems in school and acting out, I knew that something wasn’t right. Her teachers wanted me to put her on ADD medications, but I didn’t think that that was the right course for us. I had serious doubts that ADD was what was causing her problems. I took her to several different specialists before discovering that her issues in school were actually do to a visual processing problem. The doctor recommended vision therapy, not medication, to help correct the problem and get her back on track. The exercises are really starting to pay off, and she’s showing great improvement.
