If you have suffered a traumatic brain injury such as a concussion and are still recovering from it, you may suffer one or more issues with your vision that are affecting your recovery, or in some cases, the quality of your life. For this reason, you need to be evaluated by a neuro-optometrist to determine if there is an underlying problem. The following are a few things you should know about this type of vision therapy.
There is a need for an evaluation by a neuro-optometrist
It is not uncommon for a vision problem related to your brain injury to be overlooked. In some situations, it may not have been detected at all. Doctors who are specialists in evaluating brain injuries, such as those from a concussion, are not using the same testing methods as a neuro-optometrist does, so it is easy to miss these issues. They will run several tests on your eyes to discover if there are any problems that relate to your brain injury. These tests are not typically done by a doctor who is involved in evaluating your concussion.
Many vision symptoms can be alleviated with treatment
There are vision issues that are caused by a concussion that may be helped by vision therapy. Some of these problems may not be obvious to you. If you suffer from headaches, this can be directly related to your vision. Perhaps you have no problem with reading, but after a short time, you begin to suffer a headache. A neuro-optometrist may be able to determine the problem with your vision, and with the aid of corrective lenses, you will be able to read for a longer time without experiencing a headache.
You may experience a better quality of life with treatment
Rehabilitation from a concussion can be a long process that is fraught with pitfalls. There may be times that it seems as if you are almost completely rehabilitated only to take a step back. With concussion vision rehabilitation as a part of the process of concussion rehabilitation, you may be able to have a better quality of life during this time. Depending upon your issue, there are special lenses that can improve your eyesight. Prism lenses, for example, can help with double vision, and ambient lenses can help with spatial problems.
If you have had a traumatic brain injury such as a concussion, you should consider seeing a neuro-optometrist for your vision. They provide services that can help you during your rehabilitation. They can test your vision in specific ways to determine if there has been an undetected issue with your eyes or diagnose a problem you are having. They may be able to help the rehabilitation process with their treatment and provide you with a better quality of life.

When my daughter began having academic problems in school and acting out, I knew that something wasn’t right. Her teachers wanted me to put her on ADD medications, but I didn’t think that that was the right course for us. I had serious doubts that ADD was what was causing her problems. I took her to several different specialists before discovering that her issues in school were actually do to a visual processing problem. The doctor recommended vision therapy, not medication, to help correct the problem and get her back on track. The exercises are really starting to pay off, and she’s showing great improvement.
