3 Ways To Reduce Your Chances Of A Yeast Infection

Blog

Yeast infections are fungal infections that are usually characterized by burning and itching in the genital region. For every four ladies in this country, three of them will have such an infection in their lifetimes. Many of them will go on to have more than one. They can be very uncomfortable; to avoid them, use the following tips to reduce your chances of getting a yeast infection.

Reduce Sugar in Your Diet

Candida, the type of yeast that typically causes these kinds of infections, exists naturally on mucous membranes inside your body. It's only when it grows out of control that you get an infection. You can prevent overgrowth of candida, and one of the ways to do that is to cut down on the sugar in your diet.

Sugar can be a source of food for the yeast in your body, so if you don't provide very much sugar to the yeast growing in your body, you can keep yeast levels under control. Keep in mind that sugar can be natural (fruit) or artificial (candy), but try to reduce both kinds of sugar in your life so you can avoid an infection.

When Taking Antiobiotics, Eat Yogurt

You may not realize this, but the antibiotics you use for bacterial infections can cause a yeast infection. Antibiotics work to kill the bacteria that is causing your infection, but the bad news is that they also disrupt the levels of beneficial bacteria that exist in your vaginal area. When that happens, yeast is allowed to multiply, resulting in an infection.

You might need to take antibiotics, but if you do, add yogurt to your diet. Yogurt contains probiotics, which are microorganisms that encourage the regrowth of the beneficial bacteria you need to prevent yeast overgrowth in your body.

Avoid Scented Tampons and Sprays

You might think you are keeping the area fresh, but using tampons and sprays that are scented could affect the yeast to beneficial bacteria ratio in your genital area. As a result you could get a yeast infection. Instead, use unscented tampons and refrain from using deoderizing sprays in that area.

Use the tips in this article to help decrease your chances of getting a yeast infection. If you start experiencing symptoms of an infection, be sure to see your doctor. Even though there are over-the-counter creams available, your doctor or someone at a place like Anchorage OB will be able to make a definitive diagnosis so you can be sure that you do not have a more serious health issue.

Making Changes With Vision Therapy

When my daughter began having academic problems in school and acting out, I knew that something wasn’t right. Her teachers wanted me to put her on ADD medications, but I didn’t think that that was the right course for us. I had serious doubts that ADD was what was causing her problems. I took her to several different specialists before discovering that her issues in school were actually do to a visual processing problem. The doctor recommended vision therapy, not medication, to help correct the problem and get her back on track. The exercises are really starting to pay off, and she’s showing great improvement.
